Marie Davenport (McMahon), 39, of Guilford, CT, repeated as women’s champion in the 43rd annual Blessing of the Fleet road race despite having to stop twice due to stomach issues. Davenport, a 1996 and 2004 Irish Olympian and former Providence College All-American finished in 1:00:26.
“I’m not sure what happened out there…I did not feel well. I have not raced but a few times since this race last year. I’m glad to have won,” explained Davenport who stated she will probably begin training for her third marathon shortly. Marie ran a 2:47:36 in Philadelphia last November and a 2:33:59 in New York City in 2005. “I’m hoping to run Boston after I turn 40 in January” noted the former NCAA indoor 5000 meter champion.
