Another Close Finish in Providence

cvs-5k-2016-09-18-mason-hillAh, the CVS Downtown 5k. My favorite time of the year. The days are growing shorter, the weather is noticeably cooler┬áhumid as all hell (?) and some of the better runners around all seem to move to Concord, MA…and then move away quickly*.

Fans in attendance were treated to yet another close finish as Ryan Hill broke the tape in 13:57 while Shadrack Kipchirchir and Sam Chelanga were both hot on his heels in 13:58. Shadrack got the edge over Sam though.

Those three were the only ones to break 14, but the top 10 were all under 14:15 on what was an unseasonably humid day.

Aliphine Tuliamuk joined Ryan Hill as a USATF national champion with her winning time of 15:22. Aliphine ended up 35th overall and with a comfortable advantage over the rest of the women. The women’s race wasn’t as close as the men’s, but there was some good depth there as the top 4 all went under 16. Following Tuliamuk was PC grad Emily Sisson (15:42), Jordan Hasay (15:48) and BAA standout Sarah Pagano (15:55).

Taking away the seasonal Concord crowd, the local guys were actually paced by Julian Saad (NE Distance) and Liam Hillery (Ocean State AC). Julian was 15th in 14:29 and Liam came in a few spots later (21st, 14:55).

A group of inspirational young ‘uns from the kids races stole the show though…

*Obviously joking. Guessing the location of their agent is listed as their city in the results. Still fun to think of runners like Chris Solinsky and Andy Bumbalough moving to MA though, isn’t it?
